DIY (Upcycled) Music Finding Coaster

Got some rusty canning lids and music trash laying around? Try out this upcycled coaster idea! I used felts and keypads, but you could try strings, reeds, keys, even small bridges! If you don’t collect music trash like I tend to do 😂, check with your local instrument repair shop to see if you could take some garbage off their hands.

Supplies

  • old canning lid and ring
  • epoxy (I used EnviroTex Lite)
  • super glue
  • cups and stirrrers for epoxy
  • felt
  • paint
  • marker (I used a disappearing fabric marker, but use whatever writing implement you have available)
  • scissors
  • music findings (I also used some little sixteenth note confetti)

How To:

Glue canning (jar) lid into the ring. Allow to dry.

Paint. I used spray paint. Apparently white paint isn’t the best color to use with EnviroTex, so you might want to choose a different color.

Allow to dry.

Arrange your finding in the lid and glue.

Allow to dry.

Mix your epoxy according to package directions and pour over your findings. I think I ended up mixing two small batches for this round.

Allow to cure.

Add in any small embellishments like music-themed confetti. You can be as precise or imprecise as you’d like.

Mix and pour another layer of epoxy (not pictured). Allow to cure.

Trace the bottom of your coaster (what would’ve been the top of the lid) onto felt. Cut it out.

Add super glue along the (new) bottom rim of your coaster and glue the felt on.

Allow to dry, and trim off any excess.

I don’t think I mixed and/or measured my EnviroTex right, because it still doesn’t seem to have fully cured. What are your top tips for working with epoxy?
