DIY Flapped Mask (for Wind Instrumentalists) + FREE pattern

There’s been a lot of adapting in the world due to COVID-19/coronavirus, including a huge boom in mask-making (shoutout to all the makers who helped during the PPE the shortage!). The music world has adapted too.

Whether you’re pro-mask, anti-mask, or somewhere in between, they’ve become a much more common part of life in 2020.

Today on the blog, I’m sharing another pattern for a wind instrumentalist face mask. This mask features an opening, with a flap that stays open or closed by an adjustable ear strap. I actually might like the this wind mask version better myself, but let me know in the comments which one you prefer.

I don’t know the efficacy of this mask, especially with the flap that could catch germs & then bring them into the mask when closed, so (as usual), use at your own risk & do your own research.

With all that said (or typed), let’s get into the tutorial!

    Pattern

    1. Print & cut out pattern.
    2. Crease on dotted line.
    3. Unfold.

    Pin

    1. Fold material in half, right sides facing.
    2. Pin each pattern piece to the material. You will be pinning to 2 layers of fabric.

    Cut & Pin & Cut

    1. Cut around each pattern piece, through both layers.
    2. Remove patterns & pin the 2 layers of each piece together.
    3. For the main mask pieces, pin at the tick marks in the pattern piece.

    Pin & Cut & Pin

    1. Fold main mask pattern piece on dotted line (where you creased earlier).
    2. Pin each pattern piece to material Your material should still be folded with right sides facing.
    3. Cut around the pattern pieces, through both layers of fabric.
    4. Pin the pieces right sides together, again pinning at tick marks on main pieces.

    Sew & iron

    1. Sew along seam allowances of both main mask sets (see photos), leaving a gap from pin to pin.
    2. Sew along seam allowances (longest curved side) of each flap piece.
    3. Trim seam allowances if necessary.
    4. Iron Seam allowances to the sides.

    Pin

    1. Open main mask piece (flatten…but it shouldn’t actually be flat).
    2. With right sides together, match up holes & seams & pin.
    3. Pin around the edges.
    4. Sew along the top & bottom.

    Ear Strap

    1. Cut a piece of jersey yarn (mine should’ve been half this width) & fold in half lengthwise.
    2. Find the center edge of one flap piece, & place the two jersey ends there.
    3. Sandwich the other flap piece on top & pin, leaving the side with the tail open.
    4. Sew around the 3 sides.
    5. Trim seam allowance & corners.
    6. Turn, making sure corners are turned.
    7. Fold open end in, pin, & iron.

    Main Mask

    1. Trim seam allowances.
    2. Turn.
    3. Match the holes & pin around hole.
    4. Iron.
    5. Sew around opening. I tried to hand know the threads, but they were tangled & a spot didn’t get fully sewn. I ended up going back over part of it & backstitching too.

    Attach Flap

    1. Iron seams.
    2. The “tails” on the mask should be folded over. Make sure to iron those too.
    3. Lines the seams of the mask & flap up & pin the open end of the flap to the mask.
    4. Stitch down on the open end.

    Straps

    1. On the main mask, fold each flap over twice, iron, & stitch down to make the casing for the strap(s).
    2. Thread jersey yarn through the casings. Using a safety pin to help thread it through really helps.

    Ear Loop

    1. I had to trim the jersey for the loop so it would fit through the bead. Avoid this by making sure it’s thin enough before you sew it on.
    2. Cut the length of jersey to make 2 pieces.
    3. Thread one piece through a bead. Use a folded over piece of wire to help it through.
    4. Thread the other piece of jersey through the bead, going the other direction. Use pliers to help pull the wire or jersey through, if necessary.
    5. Knot the all the jersey ends. I made an extra loop when knotting.

    To Wear

Place the straps over your head & tie the tie as you would with other masks. Adjust the ear loops as necessary for whichever side the flap is on.

If you want, you can add an extra layer of material in the middle of the masks as well.

You could also make variations on this mask. I’m thinking about making a video or a few with adaptations. Is that something you’d be interested in? Let me know in the comments!
