Katherine Siochi…on that beautiful black dress!

In October of 2017, I got to meet Katherine Siochi, former AHS concert artist, 2016 Gold Medalist of the USA International Harp Competition, & current principal harpist with the Sarasota Orchestra (among other accomplishments)! We met for coffee at The Reserve, where we chatted for this interview. I have quite a bit of material, so it’s split it into multiple blog posts (see some of Katherine’s thoughts on tech & social media here, & then check out a few differences between harping in NYC & Sarasota) Be sure to follow me on Instagram, Twitter, & Facebook to be reminded when posts go up!

Today’s segment is very short, but one of my favorite parts of the interview! We talked about that gorgeous black dress & I learned an interesting story about it!

About the dress…

That was in Hong Kong at the World Harp Congress…There’s kind of a funny story about that dress, because I wore it in Hong Kong, and…because of my travel plans (the summer was a little crazy), I had to get it hemmed and taken in, so I hadn’t tried it on since the last time it had been [altered]. And then my mom…brought it, and I tried it on the day of the concert and it felt fine. But I didn’t run through my whole program. I thought it was fine. I went out there and I got to this one part in Parish-Alvars where it was this big jump when my right hand has to go really high up. And since it has long sleeves, the space between under the arm and the bodice was too tight and I couldn’t reach as high as I needed to. Well, I probably could’ve, but I felt like it was maybe going to rip if I went for it. So that was not ideal, so it’s just another lesson.

Normally I’m pretty good about [trying them on]. Before USA IHC last summer I…brought four different dresses: one for each stage. And then I ran the entire program in each dress that I was going to wear for it. Just to make sure there were no problems. But I didn’t do that this time! So they went back and put in a little gusset to give more space — just the right arm — because the left arm’s fine. So now it’s a custom harp dress.
